Community Mission

Community Mission

Edinburgh, like many cities is characterised by the absence of community, neighbours are strangers and strangers are threatening. ECM's community outreach programmes operate in both West Pilton and Pilrig among people of all ages, from diverse cultural backgrounds, of many faiths and none.

Pilton

West Pilton Christian Centre in many ways lies at the heart of the community, catering for social and spiritual needs alike through a varied programme of activities. Drop-in café, food and clothing store, library and prayer room are just some of the regular activities. Sunday evening service, men and women's bible study groups and occasional Alpha courses provide opportunities for exploring the meaning of life and faith.

The centre work is staffed by three members of the ECM team, Thomas Kisitu, Sharon Taylor and May Dunn, assisted by a team of volunteers.

Pilrig

Pilrig Christian Centre is situated on the old border line between Edinburgh and Leith and features an interesting, diverse local culture. The centre seeks to address some of the particular challenges represented in the community, making practical provision for those who struggle to make ends meet through the 'Basics Bank' programme managed by Bill Chalmers who is assisted by a willing team of volunteers. The “New Horizons” centre is managed by Billy McHaffie and will be opening in the near future. The centre will cater for the needs of the homeless and people who struggle with various kinds of addictive behaviour.

As a city centre Mission we seek to work closely with clergy in local community churches, seeking to complement each others ministry.
