West Pilton Christian Centre

Do you want to be a difference maker? Join our team

West Pilton Christian Centre (WPCC) is a 'half-way house' located in West Pilton - a housing scheme described in Wikipedia as:

"A housing estate which, in the past, had a reputation as a no-go area for outsiders… many residents feared to go out on the streets due to large groups of roaming teenagers, some armed with bats and golf clubs. The estate has improved greatly since the 1980's when it was considered one of the most deprived housing estates in Europe. [Nonetheless, and like in many other housing estates in the UK], West Pilton is still plagued with youth disorder, with reports of underage drinking, drug dealing, gang fights, arson attacks and burglaries".

The work at the centre is lead by Tom Kisitu, ably supported by our Missionary Sarah Johnson and a team of dedicated volunteers. We are excited and indeed privileged to serve God and His people at WPCC, and to live-out our faith alongside other Christians in the West Pilton area. We work very well together and our outreach, support and encouragement ministry continues to grow. During the last six months a weekly average of 35 people attended our drop-in cafes/table sales. 9 attended our bible study sessions, 12 families benefited a great deal from the Basics Bank Project and 11 children and 16 adults attended on Sunday evenings. Furthermore, some families who came (and still come) to the centre have gone on to join local churches in the area. This gives us tremendous joy, In fact we are eager to see more people at the centre and in the community grow in God and join a local church.

We have prioritized the need to pray for the people and issues in the community, to form ourselves into a strong and vibrant team and to build a synergistic partnership in mission with the churches in the area. We are committed to the ongoing team ministry with the churches in the area and have benefited a great deal from it. One exciting highlight of this ministry has been the joint monthly services held throughout 2009. These services were very well attended and were marked by a special spiritual atmosphere and a strong sense of communalism (to use an African expression!) They also helped to remind Christians in the area about the joy and privilege of being part of a much bigger family - the body of Christ.
We at the centre are keen to go forward together as a team and have suggested four points as raison d'être of a team ministry in West Pilton area, they are:

  • To share the Gospel of Jesus Christ in meaningful, respectful and caring ways.

  • Assisting people to grow in God, to join a local church and to find their ministry in the Body of Christ.

  • To undergird people with prayer, and to provide them (in cooperation with other support and care organisations) with support and encouragement in their life, family and work.

  • To work and cooperate with Christians, churches and other Christian groups for the good of the Gospel.

Undoubtedly, God is at work at the centre, and in West Pilton. We thank Him for what He is doing in our midst, and, like Bob Pierce, desire that "our hearts be broken with the things that break His heart". We also humbly ask this one thing of you. Prayerfully consider joining our team of prayer partners, or supporters whom, through various acts of generosity, help to ensure that those who serve in West Pilton continue to reach out, especially in this time of tremendous spiritual hunger. Also consider again prayerfully whether you could join our team as a difference maker. Contact us to explore ways you could join our team, and play an active role as a difference maker in West Pilton. And if this is God's will for your life, then follow His leading, join us, and join us in prayer that together we will know His strength and power for the tasks ahead in West Pilton.
