The theme of our conference was ‘Restless for Mission’. Why? Because we believe that as Christians we should have a persistent desire for change - we want to share God’s love with others. Rev. Dr. Bob Akroyd shared about D.L. Moody’s passion for mission - his persistent desire to show God’s love to others was something he was renowned for - so integral to his life was it he would speak to somebody every single day about Jesus. Rev. Dr. Bob Akroyd retold one story where D.L Moody had gone to bed and realised he hadn’t spoken to anybody that day so he got up out of bed and went out to find somebody to ask if they were saved. The random stranger worked out who he was by his persistence. D.L Moody had a mission heart that was restless for mission. When one lady criticised his methods of evangelism he said he didn’t particularly like them either and asked how she went about it. She didn’t. He preferred his way to hers.
What does this mean for us? At Edinburgh City Mission, we are restless for mission. One of the ways that this is happening is through appointing 3 new Mission Strengtheners who will be part of our team that stimulates and strengthens the churches work in Edinburgh. Our next Newsletter will introduce them properly (you can sign up for it here) but for now I asked them why they are restless for mission:
Steve [South East Mission Strengthener]:
“Because there’s never been a time when so many people are looking for answers, feeling so isolated and recognising the world is broken. There’s never been a time when so many churches are looking to connect with their communities. The time is right to partner with local churches to “Stimulate & Strengthen” mission.”
Charity [Leith Area Mission Strengthener]:
“I am restless for mission because there are still so many people in our city who are in situations of hopelessness and despair. Some are struggling with loneliness, broken relationships, poor mental health, debt and addictions to substances. I had my own darkness, my own rebellion against God, but Jesus has redeemed me and has brought me forgiveness, life, hope, peace and joy! It says in John 10:10 that Jesus came ‘to bring real and eternal life, more and better life than we ever dreamed of.’ (The Message version) In another passage He calls those who are feeling burdened to come to Him and He will give them rest. (Matthew 11:28). Having experienced what Jesus has done for me I am eager to pass on to those in the struggle, “Jesus wants to lighten the load, He wants to offer peace in your mind and in your heart. He brings redemption! He brings hope!”
Sarah [South West Mission Strengthener]:
“I am restless for mission because each and every one of us is precious to God; ‘He has compassion on all that He has made’ (Psalm 145). We live in a broken world and darkness at times seems to overwhelm us but we know that we have a hope and that Jesus is the light of the world. I am motivated by the fact that we can make a difference when we point people to Jesus and let them know that there is a God who loves them and who cares about the tiny details of their lives. I believe that through Jesus we can all experience the transformation that comes from knowing we matter to God. One of the best ways of demonstrating this to people is to serve them and show them we care.”
And you? Why are you restless?
