We have gathered a list of local drop-in services for people who are in crisis. Edinburgh churches are hearing the call to mission, to open their doors and get involved in outreach, which is impacting our city. If you know of a community outreach activity that isn't on our list, please contact us with details so that we can add it. Free Food without a Referral in Edinburgh

Care Van

A partnership between Bethany Christian Trust and Edinburgh City Mission, Serving soup and Sandwiches.

Lunchtimes: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays only.

Soul Food/ The Saturday Meal

During the Covid-19 crisis, Soul Food meals have transformed to a  ‘Grab & Go” service, where people can grab a Take Away and stand outside. This is with the aim of protecting our clients, staff and volunteers. 

October 2021 - some of the Soul Food meals are beginning to move to a seated meal indoors over the next few weeks.

The Breakfast Bothy (a Carlowrie Castle project)

The Breakfast Bothy is from 9am - 11 am, Monday - Friday at 100 Melville Drive, Edinburgh, EH9 9EX.  In true Carlowrie Castle style, the converted police box has been restored, transformed, and repainted in dayglo yellow and orange by volunteers. 

The Breakfast Bothy is a meeting place where people experiencing financial hardship or homelessness can visit to get a warm breakfast, coffee, tea and good chat. 

The team aim to facilitate connections and services for our guests on an as-needed and request basis, such as counseling, haircuts, legal advice, etc.

Housing and Homelessness Support in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Housing Advice Partnership (EHAP)

If someone is at risk of losing their home because their landlord or mortgage company is taking legal action to evict them, they should immediately contact Edinburgh Housing Advice Partnership who can provide advice and arrange for someone at risk of losing their home to be represented at court hearings. Advice is also provided on a wide range of housing issues - phone for an appointment with an adviser at venues across the city.

Salvation Army - Regener8

25 Niddry St, Edinburgh EH1 1LG

Day drop in service located just off the Royal Mile, Edinburgh.

Open on a daily basis from 9am to 1pm, providing a safe refuge for the street homeless. The service includes breakfast and lunch, with access to laundry and shower facilities.

Help with Emergency Money or Debt in Edinburgh

Scottish Welfare Fund (SWF)

Crisis Grants for people on income-related benefits who, due to an emergency or disaster, have no money to pay for immediate essential living costs, or

Community Care Grants to pay for essential items to help a vulnerable person to leave care or supported accommodation, or remain in their own home.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP)

Offering free debt help and money courses.  Anyone with an income either benefits or employment who is facing debt is eligible for support. CAP is unable to support people who are self employed.

Call head office in England to make first contact- 0800 328 0006, 

you will then be referred to a local branch in Edinburgh and an advisor can visit you in your home or somewhere local to you.  


Help with addiction

Teen Challenge bus Edinburgh

TCUK is a Christian organisation that offers residential programmes for people seeking freedom from addictions and life controlling problems.

Drop into the parked up bus for a cuppa and a chat.

A chance to talk to people who have come out of addiction and have faith. Not just for teenagers.

Help for women in sex work

Salvation Army

Salvation Army’s support van for sex workers in Leith.

The van is in Leith late on Sunday and Monday night. This service operates in conjunction with NHS Lothian and the charity Sacro with the aim of monitoring the health and circumstances of sex workers. Police Scotland also work closely with these services to ensure the women and volunteers are safe.


Working with woman who are at risk of or invovled in sex work.

Referrals can be made by the Police and Procurator Fiscal as diversions from prosecution. We can also accept referrals from health services, social work, other agencies, other Sacro services and self-referrals.

It can be difficult for women to access services during office hours. Therefore Sacro provide various outreach services, for direct referrals:

- Women’s Clinic, 22-24 Spittal Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9PG. Every Thursday between 5pm -7.30pm

- NHS Harm Reduction Van, Salamander Street, Leith, EH6 8PG. Every Wednesday evening between 9pm – 12am

- Sacro also provide support within the saunas in Edinburgh.
